Début 2016 paraît le premier roman d'Olivier Bourdeaut, qui devient rapidement un succès critique et populaire, recevant même quelques prix littéraires. Un an plus tard, il est adapté en bande dessinée et au théâtre, puis en feuilleton radiophonique. Enfin, le cinéma s'y intéresse quand Régis Roinsard annonce sa prochaine réalisation, En attendant Bojangles. Romain Duris, qu'il avait déjà dirigé dans son premier film, Populaire, ainsi que Virginie Efira, incarneront les rôles principaux, tandis que Grégory Gadebois complétera le casting. Tourné début 2020, le long-métrage sera sélectionné l'année d'après en séance spéciale au Festival international du film de La Roche-sur-Yon.
