Tout dans The climb clignote « film indépendant américain ». Le réalisateur, Michael Angelo Covino, est un jeune homme originaire de New-York qui a travaillé sur des films sélectionnés dans divers festivals tels que le SXSW (South by Southwest ) ou le Festival de Tribeca, et primés aux Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award. C'est son deuxième film, et il a d'ailleurs été sélectionné au Festival de Sundance, au Tiff de Toronto, à la section Un certain regard du Festival de Cannes, où il a été le Coup de cœur du Jury, ainsi qu'au Festival de Deauville, où il a reçu le Prix du Jury : n'en jetez-plus ! Il a été écrit par Covino et son meilleur ami, Kyle Marvin, avec qui il travaille depuis dix ans, avec qui il joue dedans, et ils se sont inspirés de leur propre vécu.
