Money can’t buy me love
Le réalisateur de Swallow, originaire de New-York, a grandi avec une caméra. Pour son début de carrière, avec le court-métrage Sur le fil du rasoir, qui montrait déjà une prédilection pour le thriller à tendance horrifique, il obtenait un prix au Festival de Sundance. Son premier long-métrage lui a été inspiré par sa grand-mère, qui était atteinte de troubles obsessionnels compulsifs dans les années 1950. Son mari décida, sur les conseils d’un médecin, de la faire interner et elle subit des électrochocs et une lobotomie. Pour rendre cinégénique la pathologie dont est atteinte son personnage principal, il choisit la maladie de Pica, un trouble du comportement alimentaire qui consiste à ingurgiter toutes sortes d’objets, bien entendu non comestibles.
