Clint est arrivé, sans se presser
Pour son onzième film en tant que réalisateur, Clint Eastwood réalise ici son troisième western, après L’homme des hautes plaines et Josey Wales, hors la loi. Remake d’un film de George Stevens, Pale rider, le cavalier solitaire aura droit d'être revisité par Dolph Lundgren avec Missionary Man. Il aura les honneurs de la Compétition officielle du Festival de Cannes, l'année où Emir Kusturica reçoit sa première Palme d'or pour Papa est en voyage d'affaires. Côté anecdotes, Lee Van Cleef devait tenir un des rôles du film, et le tournage était mouvementé puisque Eastwood s'y est blessé à l'épaule. On peut y voir quelques références bibliques, son titre provenant d’ailleurs d’un passage de l’Apocalypse évoquant un cavalier des Enfers.
