En 1941, Joseph Staline commande à Sergei Eisenstein, tout juste auréolé du succès de Alexandre Nevski, un film sur Ivan IV, le premier tsar à avoir unifié les royaumes éclatés de Russie. Le film aura pour vocation, en ces périodes de guerre, d'exalter le sentiment patriotique. Lorsqu'Eisenstein commence à travailler sur son script, L'armée allemande envahit l'union soviétique et la société de production du film est contrainte de s'exiler au Khazhakstan. Le début du tournage de la première partie n'interviendra qu'en 1943, après la bataille de Stalingrad. Eisenstein prévoyait de réaliser un triptyque qui reste inachevé, le réalisateur mourrant en 1948 sans avoir pu achever son œuvre. De plus, si la première partie d'Ivan le terrible donne une image magnifiée du monarque,
