Résumé : Dans une prison verticale appelée « la fosse », des prisonniers sont répartis deux par deux sur plusieurs centaines de niveaux. Tous les mois, les niveaux sont réattribués de manière aléatoire, chaque couple de prisonniers pouvant se retrouver au sommet de la fosse, ou au contraire, bien plus en profondeur. Chaque jour, la plateforme centrale, abondamment chargée de nourriture, descend étage après étage, chaque prisonnier pouvant se nourrir à sa guise de ce qu’il y trouve…
