Le tout premier film de Tim Burton contient toute son œuvre à venir. C'est aussi une autobiographie à peine déguisée dans laquelle il exprime sa différence et son malaise face aux codes culturels dominants de la société américaine, notamment ceux des studios Disney pour lesquels il travaillait. Alors que ceux-ci connaissaient un passage à vide tant créatif que commercial au début des années 80, ils refoulèrent "Vincent" au fond d'un tiroir avant que le succès de "L'étrange Noël de M. Jack" lui aussi mal assumé dans un premier temps ne l'en fasse sortir. "Vincent" qui recourt au même procédé d'animation en stop-motion et utilise un noir et blanc expressionniste raconte l'histoire d'un petit garçon lunaire à l'imaginaire gothique fasciné par les récits fantastiques et les films
