Az Írnok évezredek óta nem tudott aludni. Éjszakánként csak feküdt a padlón, mint egy kőszobor, és a többi higanyfényű éjszakára emlékezett, amikor ugyanígy virrasztott. Az éjjelek egymásra rakódtak, súlyuk az Írnok szívén nyugodott. Kezdetben mintha csak fekete madártollak hullottak volna puhán a hóba. Ezek voltak az első évtizedek. Később mintha szurokszínű eső ütötte volna az ablaküveget. Ezek voltak az első évszázadok. Végül úgy érezte, hogy éjsötét, fényes márványtömbök csapódnak a szívébe hatalmas robajjal, és mozdulatlanná dermesztik. Ezek voltak az első évezredek.

Az Írnok lakása leginkább egy középkori szerzetes cellájához hasonlított. Vagy inkább egy szerzetes cellájának színházi makettjéhez, hiszen olyan puritán, szinte csak jelzésszerű volt az egész berendezés. A
