Oiseau aquatique ansériforme migrateur au cou court, au bec aplati apte à filtrer la vase, un volatile aux pattes palmées très courtes et dont certaines espèces font l'objet d'un élevage important pour leur chair. Sa femelle est la cane et son petit le caneton (wikipedia).

Pierre Belon (1517-1554) considéré comme le plus ancien naturaliste et ornithologue français, le décrit-il dans son Histoire de la nature des oyseaux, "avec leurs descriptions et naïfs portraicts retirez du naturel", daté de 1554. Dans ce traité de 381 pages, il définira "le canard et sa fasmille" comme un "oyseau très mystérieux"...
