And as I walked by the river today all the corn had been cut, and there were no barges left where the soldiers would work like slaves to get them in and out of the water while the officer sat on the bank, not even watching, but paring his nails.

Et tandis que je me baladais le long de la rivière, tout le maïs avait été coupé.

Tout le blé avait été coupé lors de ma balade le long de la rivière. Il n’y avait aucune barge, de celles où les soldats travaillaient comme des esclaves à les                                  [2]pendant que l’officier, assis sur la rive, s’aiguisait[3] les ongles sans même les regarder.
