La figure de Tom Stoppard est incontournable dans le paysage dramatique britannique. Né en Tchécoslovaquie, il émigre en Angleterre après la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, prenant le nom de son beau-père. Après un début de carrière dans le journalisme, il se lance dans l’écriture de pièces de théâtre, mais aussi de scenarii pour le cinéma. Il participe ainsi à celui de Brazil, de Terry Gilliam, Empire du soleil de Steven Spielberg ou Shakespeare in Love, qui lui vaudra un Oscar. En 1997, sa pièce The invention of love, récemment traduite en français, retrace de façon détournée la vie d’Alfred Edward Housman, philologue et poète britannique contemporain d’Oscar Wilde. Ce dernier figure également dans l’ouvrage, en compagnie d’autres figures de la période victorienne, tel l’auteur Jerome K.
