"L'homme qui venait d'ailleurs" est un film qui a autant vampirisé David Bowie que celui-ci a été vampirisé par lui. Autrement dit cette rencontre entre un artiste total (ou tendant à l'être) et un cinéaste de SF a enrichi l'un et l'autre. Il est en effet impossible de séparer le film de la mythologie spatiale et extra-terrestre véhiculée par cet artiste qui a surgi sur la scène internationale sous la forme d'un cosmonaute en perdition (ou en plein trip hallucinogène selon les interprétations) puis sous celle d'un authentique alien. Thomas Jerome Newton renvoie donc à Tom, à Ziggy mais pas seulement.
