True Light
Always roamed the darker corners
Kept company with ghosts and mourners
Got so used to living in the black
I couldn’t see the life I’d left out back
Surrounded by a bottomless night
Still, I never gave up the fight
Well, maybe once, when I ran out of breath
But that’s between me and Death
The lady never punched my ticket
Just cracked the door and let me glimpse it
Like ten thousand suns shining down on me
Wasn’t sure if I’d burn or finally break free
I ain’t saying I’m enlightened
Too damn dark and too damn burdened
But when you’re lost, you need some direction
A compass or a light on the horizon
I’ve always fought the pitch-black darkness
Stumbled more than once into the dreariness
Now I navigate the moonless sky
And the road gets easier with a little light nearby
Those ten thousand suns upon my face
Put a little fire back in its place
Charge these bones and pull me through
Give me enough juice to stay true
From shadowed roads and dying dusk
From gloom and smoke and settling dust
To something bright enough to see
A little light made sense of me
I ain’t saying I’m enlightened
Too damn dark and too damn burdened
But when you’re lost, you need some direction
A compass or a light on the horizon
Split between the shadow and the light
Half of me running, half ready to fight
Still, there’s one call I cannot deny
I grab my pen and let it testify
I ain’t saying I’m enlightened
Too damn dark and too damn burdened
But I used to wander through the twilight
Before I finally found the true light
… found the true light
