3 must-know tips for becoming a great storyteller

Everyone has a story to tell, it could be a stunning once-in-a-lifetime experience, it can also be a sweet occasion that happened the other day just on the street you pass by every day.

The million-dollar question here is: how to tell a good story and catch people’s attention?

The Panodyssey team with our experienced co-writers already listed out a few tips in our White Paper on Web Writing including highlighting the keywords, identifying hot-zones, leaving the right bait, etc. (If you haven’t downloaded the guide, feel free to visit the link at the end of the article!) In this article, you will find additional storytelling skills to better persuade someone, explain topics more clearly, or to inspire more people!

Place hooks here and there

As mentioned in the white paper, the suspense helps to keep your audience engaged. It can highlight a dramatic scene, can build twists that lead to excitement and keep your audience waiting for the following story.

Briefly speaking, while it builds up the mood and withholds key information, it leads to the expectations your readers would have towards your story. Experienced and aspiring authors use this technique very often in describing the characters, linking each chapter and keeping their readers hooked.

However, pay attention to the blogging format! Since blogs are shorter, it is more ideal to hide small hooks and details in your sentences by using simple and precise ways instead of building up emotions through several paragraphs. Keep the pressure on!

Repeat your messages wisely

The more you listen to a song or read a book, the more likely you’ll remember them. When you look back to important speeches from the past like the one from Martin Luther King, you can easily recall the main messages he’d like to send out: “I have a dream”.

It’s no different for telling a story with written words. When you identify the key message you’d like to talk about, you can vary your way of hammering them in your reader’s head. Try to use phrases like “Let me say that again” or rephrase your main points in different paragraphs while carefully weaving details in each phrase. Repetition is a powerful tool to draw people’s attention, make a point, create a common feeling, and more. However, always keep in mind to not overkill or repeat unnecessary points. Repeat but also restrain yourself so your story won’t be irritating to readers.

Be humorous

When structuring a piece of your article with tension and suspense, you’d want to keep a good feeling for your readers when they go through your work. That’s where the humor comes in. Plus, a funny story is often more memorable than plain text. Playful parts in your story help to create connections between you and your audience. Immerse your readers and draw their attention to your main message with a good joke that’s related to your key point and that just happened in your real life. Lastly, focus on what’s common for everyone and always test your humor. What’s funny for you may not be as hilarious for others. You don’t want to accidentally offend your audience because you get a joke wrong.

Place a smile on your audience’s face!

Stories often create “sticky” memories and trigger similar feelings between you and your audience. Don’t forget: find your reader’s interests and hook them, repeat assertively and add a dose of humor along the way! Want to learn more about our white paper on web writing?
