Saint Valentine’s day: the celebration of love or pure commercialization?

Love is in the air 💕 It literally is, with all the pink decorations, flashy banners and numerous promotional campaigns we may observe the last two weeks. Companies have begun to set their “traps” for customers willing to celebrate love.

The commercialization of the holidays is not new. While we are used for the Christmas and the New Year shopping rush, Saint Valentine’s day was not celebrated by as many people before. But companies realised that butterflies in the stomach make customers spend more and started to do their best to make St Valentine’s day a reason to purchase something.

With the growing tendency to independence, individualism and diminution of family values, people tend to stay single instead of being in a couple. Being single is not a shame now, what is more, it’s an expression of freedom and infinite love to oneself.

Because of that, big companies are turning St Valentine’s day into a cause to celebrate either your relationship or its absence. Let’s have a look at some examples.

Burger King

Burger King caught the two big hype waves: not only the St Valentine’s day but also the release of Birds of Prey, a popular movie about a post-breakup story of Harley Quinn.

Bring a photo of your ex and get a free burger — what’s a better treat for people who have just gotten out of a toxic relationship?

Fever

Fever is a service which suggests events and things to do in free time. In their newsletter, they made two selections of events: both for couples and for single people. Fever used a play of words in French: it’s either Saint Valentin or Sans Valentin (without Valentine). 100% audience cover!

Cache Cache

With or without Valentine, love is in the air! Once again, even if you’re single, there’s a reason to celebrate the day of love. Of course, you should better get some new clothes for the occasion.

Etam

Who can offer you a better present than yourself? Etam takes St Valentine’s holiday to a new level: they encourage customers to celebrate love to themselves. Really, why wouldn’t you offer a gift to the person you love the most?

Nina Ricci

It’s important to be in love, no matter if you’re single, in a couple or if « it’s complicated ». And what’s more important: find love in Nina Ricci.

Teamaxe

A retailer of motorcycling equipment, Teamaxe encourages its subscribers to make a pleasant gift to (yourself) the person you love.

These brief examples demonstrate how many small details influence us when making decisions.

Single or not, beware of the marketing tricks and be conscious about your purchases.

Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

Très sensible aux arguments de la vendeuse, un juste mot pour l'entreprenant qui voudrait seul l'affaire !
